Course Description: Through a combination of presentations, discussions, and workshop activities, you will gain an understanding of the current state of Federal and Washington State law with respect to confidentiality and HIPAA requirements, legal privilege, professional ethics and personal relationships, malpractice, liability, and the standard of care. The event is intended for a wide range of mental health professionals including mental health counselors, marriage and family counselors, and social workers.
Class Structure and Information: Each course date is limited to a maximum of 6 participants. This allows for the best balance of personal interaction and individual attention. Presenter: Steven A. Maybell, PhD, is coming again for Clinical Conversations. Steve will address questions and concerns that participants (clinicians and others) present, and he will encourage eve-ryone to share ideas so as to take advantage of individual and collective wisdom.
With over 40 years of experience in mental-health counseling and therapy, Steve says he is deeply devoted to Adlerian Psychology and its application to his work and his life. He is dedicated to "a model of therapy that emphasizes mutual respect, collaboration, tapping the wisdom within each client, contributing to the client's sense that they matter, that they make sense, and that there are new possibilities available for them to live a life of greater quality."
He also practices reprocessing therapy (Lifespan Integration and EMDR), which he sees as powerful tools to assist clients in moving beyond trauma and discouraging experiences in their past.
Steve is Director of the Student Counseling Center and Professor in Marriage and Family Therapy at Seattle Pacific University. He was recently recognized as Supervisor of the Year for the Wash-ington Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, and Supervisor of the Year for the University of Washington School of Social Work.

"Cognitive Behavior Therapy For
Anxiety and Panic"
Day 1: This experiential workshop will provide a basic overview of cognitive behavior therapy for generalized anxiety disorder. Participants will learn how to conceptualize GAD patients according to the cognitive model, plan treatment, develop a strong therapeutic alliance, provide psychoeducation, identify and respond to key anxious thoughts and beliefs, design behavioral experiments, modify maladaptive coping strategies, and increase tolerance for uncertainty. Participants will also learn specific treatment techniques for worry, including restructuring negative cognitions about worry, identifying differences between productive and unproductive worry, and exposure to worry. Case examples will be used to illustrate specific techniques and participants will have the opportunity to observe and participate in role plays. Questions will be encouraged throughout the workshop.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the first day of training, participants will be able to:
Describe the cognitive l model of GAD;
Use a cognitive conceptualization of GAD to plan treatment;
Use effective cognitive techniques with GAD patients;

Presenter: James L. Shenk, PhD
Dr. Shenk is an adjunct faculty member of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Philadelphia, PA. He has maintained a full time clinical practice and has served as Director of the Cognitive Therapy Institute since moving to San Diego in 1991. He has provided weekly supervision and consultation to over 15 postdoctoral interns and licensed therapists who have worked at the Institute. Dr. Shenk completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1988, and continued on as a postdoctoral research fellow at UCLA 1988-1989. He then pursued a specialization in cognitive therapy during 3 years of training under the mentorship of Christine Padesky, Ph.D. in Newport Beach, developing expertise in treatments for panic, social phobia, OCD, GAD, and other anxiety disorders, and depression. In addition to his psychotherapy practice, Dr. Shenk has taught cognitive therapy and supervised doctoral students at the California School of Professional Psychology (now at Alliant International University) since 1992 and has offered training in cognitive therapy of panic disorder, social phobia, OCD and depression at local, state, and international conventions. He is a co-author in publications on cognitive therapy and other clinical issues and is one of the Founding Fellows of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (ACT), the premier organization that evaluates and certifies competency in cognitive therapy.

Use Creativity to reach At Risk Youth"
Art with Heart's CHILL & SPILL INTENSIVE TRAINING provides a roadmap for understanding the Chill & Spill Program in reaching high-risk youth. Chill & Spill is a prevention and intervention tool that fosters social and emotional learning in a variety of settings. Brian's professional background has focused on health and mental health in community-based organizations, long-term care, acute care, and outpatient programs. Marshall Jung, DSW - Marshall Jung, DSW, Professor Emeritus, received his master's from the University of Southern California and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He has over 35 years of social work experience in the capacity of community organizer, agency executive, educator, writer, supervisor, trainer, clinician, facilitator of retreats, and spiritual director. Dr. Jung has presented supervision workshop for the NASW WA Chapter and for NASW CA Chapter. Dr. Jung is a nationally recognized expert in marital and family therapy. He is also recognized for his expertise in presenting models of practice including but not limited to Structural Family Therapy, Case Management, and the Recovery Model of Practice, as well as for his expertise on clinical supervision and ethical practice. He has provided workshops at numerous national and state conferences as well as for developmental centers, family and social service agencies, mental health, health and residential treatment facilities, and state and veteran's hospitals throughout the Southwestern United States and Canada. His research interests are the interbeing of counseling, psychotherapy and cross-cultural spirituality. He and his wife Dr. Elsa O'Connor have taught counseling courses in Nepal, Bhutan, S.E. HEAL Facilitator Training Program for
Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy &
Learning (EFPL)
HEAL-FTP provides post-graduate level training for professionals seeking the knowledge and experience to incorporate Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning (EFPL) into their counseling, teaching, or coaching practice. This 5-month course prepares participants to facilitate horse activities for experiential psychotherapy or learning, helping clients increase relational ability, emotional well-being, self-awareness and empowerment.

The HEAL-FTP is a 5-month program. It begins May 06, 2013 with one full week of on-site instruction at the HEAL Ranch in Chehalis, WA, USA. After this, students spend 10-12 hours per week in distance learning from home, including EFPL practice sessions, reading assignments and peer conferences. The final week is again on-site at HEAL October 07-13, 2013, when students complete supervised sessions with HEAL clients. HEAL supports graduates with continuing education, mentorship and supervision.
Presenter: M. Leigh Shambo, MSW, LMHC is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in EFPL with adults and children, and EFPL therapy groups and personal growth workshops. Leigh founded Human-Equine Alliances for Learning (HEAL), a non-profit 501c(3) in 2000. Leigh is the lead author for HEAL- sponsored research on the efficacy of EFP for survivors of complex trauma, and is frequently invited to teach workshops and seminars on EFPL in the US and abroad.

Use Creativity to Reach At-Risk Youth: Chill & Spill Intensive Training
Art with Heart's CHILL & SPILL INTENSIVE TRAINING provides a roadmap for understanding the Chill & Spill Program in reaching high-risk youth. Chill & Spill is a prevention and intervention tool that fosters social and emotional learning in a variety of settings. Based in cognitive behavioral, narrative and art therapies, the journal is designed to increase self-awareness, increase management of emotions, and promote healthy connections. This intensive 1.5 day course prepares participants to bring the C&S Program to their adolescent clients.
