Oh, yes--a geography note for the
uninformed. Vashon is a beautiful wooded island in salt water
Puget Sound just southwest of Seattle. Vashon Island is accessible
by ferry from north Tacoma or West Seattle. The name is pronounced "Va'-shon"
not "Vashion" (rhymes with fashion) as my good friend pronounces it.
At 37 square miles, Vashon-Maury Island is
about 60 percent larger in area than Manhattan Island, with about 1/150
the population. There are no bridges to connect the island with
the mainland, a big factor contributing to the island's relative
isolation and rural character. An isthmus built by the US Army
Corps of Engineers that connects the Vashon Island to neighboring Maury
Island. Washington State Ferries connect to Tacoma at the
south end of the island. At the north end of the island, ferries
connect to Southworth (to the west) and to West Seattle (to the east).
