Women Over 40 Who Never Had Children

Who Should Participate: Women--Come join a community of women in a 6 week exploration group. The purpose of this group is to support women to explore what it means to not follow the path usually chosen by women in this society. While grief can be a part of this journey, the freedom we have, and what we chose to do with that freedom, is a major characteristic of this group.

The 6 weeks cover:
• Who am I as a woman who never had kids?
• Lost & found: Dreams, roles & relationships
• Body image and menopause
• How do I care for myself when I become an elder?
• Do I need to grieve?
• What will I leave this world?

The group is led by Jane B.G. Tornatore, PhD, who is committed to helping people shift old patterns so they can lead a freer life.

"Thanks once again for creating a nurturing environment for our support group. I received so much insight and awareness from the sharing, and I especially enjoyed the exercises and rituals. You are fabulous at creating room for exploration and possibility within a safe, structured environment."

"I would recommend Jane's group to every woman. She brings up very deep issues that are worth looking at and sharing in a supportive group. I felt very safe in this group because of the skill Jane brought to it. I would even take this class again."

"Jane is warm, brave, insightful and funny—a great combination for a deep, meaningful conversation for you or women you know." Sheila Bixler, M.A., C.Ht, Counselor, Hypnotherapist.

 Women's Support Group: Looking for Affiliation, Support and Empowerment

Who Should Participate:Women looking for affiliation, support and empowerment. As women, we are raised in the use of emotional language and intuition, as well as practical common sense. So when women gather, they use these skills and can go quickly to the core of most social or personal issues. The satisfaction that comes as a result, and the personal connection felt in such a process, is naturally empowering. Groups meet every other week and are offered in Pioneer Square or the Green Lake area of Seattle. Fees are on a sliding scale, or are waved for current clients already in individual or couples sessions with Janette. There are two types of groups: the Support Group shares personal stories from our lives with others, to support our personal growth; and the Dream Group shares dreams and dream images with others who discuss how they personally relate through intuitive wisdom to your dream material.

Dates/Times Offered:
Green Lake: Monday evening, 7-8:30 PM, bi-weekly
Fee:$25-70 (income-based)
Facilitator qualifications: Janette Brown, licensed MFT; 37 years experience.

 Mending Hearts
Location: Queen Anne, Seattle, WA 98119

Who Should Participate: Mending Hearts is a group for Women who have left or are leaving a long-term Emotionally or otherwise Abusive Relationship or who have a pattern of Abusive Relationships. The group will revolve around these 7 topics:
1) Practicing Self-Compassion; building Self-Esteem; Self-Confidence;
2) Resolving issues related to the Abuse - Undoing the Years of Brain Washing;
3) Grieving;
4) Identity work: Separating from your life with your partner and Rediscovering who you are;
5) Stress Management;
6) Reducing Anxiety & Depression; and
7) Restructuring -Creating a Satisfying Rest of Your Life. Many of the participants have voiced the fear that they were the only one who stayed in an abusive relationship so long or repeatedly picked abusers. The mirror effect of group is highly effective in breaking down the shame, isolation, and confusion shared by members. Group members sometimes exclaim to each other, "Are you sure you didn't marry my husband?" Group members benefit by learning ways to cope with abusive behavior during and after the divorce/break-up. There is often incredible stress involved with divorcing an abusive spouse who manipulates the legal system to further abuse and stalk their partner. These are the "difficult divorces," known as contentious divorces in legal circles. Support and coaching can lessen the stress of these divorces. The group is limited to five members.

PlacingTelephone Calls to Therapists and Leaving Messages

As a webmaster, I frequently call counselors and I am caught off balance when I don't get an answering machine.  I say, "Excuse me, I was expecting to talk to a machine and wasn't expecting to talk to a real person!"

Counselors in private practice are small business people--often really small--and usually have no employees.  Counselors usually handle the telephone, counsel individual clients and groups, get the mail, write the letters, do the bookkeeping, market their practices, do the taxes and everything else that needs to be done to stay in business.  Counselors in private practice often see clients in the evening, so it is usually better to call during the day.

All this to explain that when you finally decide to call a counselor and see about joining a therapy group, you will probably get an answering machine.  It may take a couple of days for the counselor to get back to you.  Even if they call you back immediately, if there is another voice on your answering machine, they may be afraid that they will be violating your confidentiality if they leave a message for you where someone else may hear them.  So they may have to hang up without leaving a message. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is important to tell the counselor in your voicemail message whether or not it's all right for them to leave a message when they call back.

And finally, if you don't hear back--please call again.  Leave your name and telephone number.  Say the number slowly and distinctly and say it twice.  I can remember listening to messages as many as twelve times trying to identify all the numbers; Counselors really try, but you've got to do your part, too.  Thanks.
