Books on Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Self-Improvement Topics

    These are books frequently recommended to clients who seek help for a variety of life issues. Your mental health counselor, chemical dependency counselor, or social worker will frequently assign specific self-help books to clients as counseling homework to extend and expand the effectiveness of the therapy session and to speed recovery.

O  Addictions--(General)  Drug abuse, substance abuse, chemical dependency, and recovery.

O  Affirmations--Positive self-talk  Change the way you talk to yourself, alter your perceptions of yourself and the world, develop self confidence and self esteem.

O  Alcoholism: What is alcoholism?  Is it treatable?  What can friends and family do? 

O  Anger  When you anger doesn't serve you, but causes trouble and alienates the people who matter, what can you do?  What can friends or family do to help an angry person?  How to get on with your life.

O  Anxiety Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, agoraphobia are names of some of the diagnostic names given to the disorder.  Are you just shy, or do you suffer from clinical anxiety?

O  Body Dysmorphic Disorder  [also see "eating disorders," below.]   BDD is a preoccupation with some imagined defect in appearance or a markedly obsessive focus  on a perceived abnormality of the nose, hair (any body part), complexion, or on the shape and weight of the body.  Sufferers feel misunderstood and cannot believe that others do not see their perceived ugliness.

O  Boundaries in Relationships  [also see "relationships"]  People who invade your space, or try to control what you think, feel, do, or look like.

O  Codependence Sometimes when you are close to someone with a handicap or disability, you begin to change the way you think or behave as part of trying to help them.  In the process, you may become part of the problem and actually hinder the recovery of the other person.  You may also learn to relate to others in an unrecognized undesirable and unhealthy way.

O  Couples Problems: When a couple's interactions become dysfunctional habits, it's time to figure out what you are doing and break the cycle.  Time to figure out what you are doing and learn how to change and rediscover pleasure and enjoyment in your relationship.

O  Chemical Dependency (General Topic) It doesn't make any difference what the chemical is, booze, drugs, etc. it can become a problem.  When you don't feel right without your substance and it becomes a priority in your life, it's time to make some changes.

O  Child Abuse: Abuse can take many forms--physical, psychological, sexual--but many who experience it are changed in negative ways, and as adults seek information to help them overcome their problems.

O  Cocaine

O  Communication--Conflict Resolution

O  Courtship and Dating  It's supposed to be exciting and fun.  But suppose that it's scary and awkward!  Congratulations, you are probably normal.  But if you are too scared to have ever had a real relationship or find yourself socially paralyzed, you need help.  A book may get you started, but you probably also need counseling.

O  Depression Clinical depression is a serious problem that can be treated successfully by medications or by cognitive therapy or a combination of the two.

O  Domestic Violence

O  Eating Disorders--Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, other.

O  Ethical Issues It's not always easy to know what is right and what is wrong in a particular situation.  Ethics provides some guidelines to follow.

O  Family of Origin Issues  Are you walking around with problems that have their roots in the family values and practices that you have always considered to be perfectly normal?  Secrets?  Perfectionism?  What happened to you?

O  Financial Issues: Our values with regard to how we feel about money and debt and how we deal with these issues can be very stressful and destroy families.

O  Gambling Addiction

O  Grief is a normal feeling that we go through when we experience a loss in our lives.  The loss may come from death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the end of independence or other causes, but all grief has certain common qualities and proceeds through similar stages.

O  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder  The obsessive need to adhere to certain routines can be only attention to detail, but can become a crippling handicap.
