NAMI = National Alliance on Mental Illness.  [NAMI Acronym Change: The NAMI National board of directors, at their August 27, 2005 board meeting, formalized a resolution regarding the revised explanation of the NAMI name. The resolution was: RESOLVED that the letters in "NAMI" the organization's name, shall stand for "National Alliance on Mental Illness" instead of "National Alliance for the Mentally Ill." This change is effective immediately.]

NAMT = National Association for Music Therapy joined with the American Association for Music Therapy to form a new unified organization, the American Music Therapy Association in 1998.

NAPALC = National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium is one of the nation's leading experts on issues of importance to the Asian American community including: affirmative action, anti-Asian violence prevention and race relations, census, immigrant rights, language access, and voting rights.

NAPHS = National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems

NAPT = National Association for Poetry Therapy

NAPUD = The National Alliance to Preventing Underage Drinking is an ad hoc coalition of public health, education, consumer, law enforcement, religious, child and family welfare, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and other national organizations dedicated to building and sustaining a broad societal commitment to reducing underage drinking.

NARACES = North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision is part of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (a division of the American Counseling Association). It emphasizes the need for quality education and supervision of counselors in all settings within the Northeastern United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

NBCCH = 1. National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists, a national certification board for hypnotherapists.    2. National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist--a national certification that requires a minimum of a master's degree, at least 60 hours of training in hypnosis, and either state license, state certification or national certification.

NBCC-I = National Board for Certified Counselors--International, founded in November 2003 as a division of NBCC.

NBCCH-PS = National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist--Public Service, this national certification requires both a master's degree and national certification in a mental health field, and at least 60 hours of training in hypnosis.  No state license or certification is required. NBCDCH = National Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Hypnotherapy. [See NBCCH, above.]

NBPTS® = The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards®. Many states now recognize teachers with NBPTS certificates and award them bonus incentives.

NCA = (1.) North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission, Chicago, IL. is a regional accrediting association for Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. (2.) Nevada Counseling Association.  (3.) National Credentialing Academy was initiated as a result of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselor’s (IAMFC) professional concerns and efforts in the area of credentialing. In 1994 a NCA was incorporated with the primary purposes to establish and monitor a national certification system, to identify professionals who have voluntarily sought and obtained certification, and to maintain the certification process. This process grants recognition to professionals who have met predetermined NCA standards in their training and experience, and meet ethical standards in the field.

NCPsyT = NAAP-registered Certified Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists.  The initials can be used by members in good standing who are certified by a psychoanalytic institute as psychoanalytic psychotherapists. NCR = National Credential Registry, maintained by the American Association of State Counseling Boards, is expected to launch in Spring 2005.  The purpose is increased licensure portability, the ability to move more easily between states with a valid counseling license.  Counselors will need to register and submit credentialing materials.  Registrants must show 5 years of post-licensure clinical experience, a current license in good standing with no history of disciplinary action.  The AASCB National Credential Registry will maintain two tiers of license requirements--those of states requiring 60 credits for licensure and those requiring 48 credits or less.  [Thanks to Midge Williams, "Licensure Portability Nears Enactment," The Advocate (a publication of the AMHCA), April 2005.] 

NCRG = National Center for Responsible Gaming is committed to funding research that someday will identify the risk factors for gambling disorders and determine methods for not only treating the disorder but preventing it.

ND = Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, treats the whole person, healing by natural rather than synthetic or invasive treatments to remove or reduce causes of symptoms or disease. Therapies include nutrition and diet, acupuncture, herbal preparations, and exercise. Practitioners complete a 4-year program and receive an N.D. degree.

NDCI = National Drug Court Institute, a division of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, was established in 2997 by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Executive Office of the President and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.

NDE = near-death experience, may or may not involve a life-threatening illness or injury, but is distinguished by aftereffect disturbance--often a spiritual or meditative state wherein the person feels changed.  OBE would be a subcategory of NDE.

NGHW = National Guild of Hypnotists Washington State Chapter of NGH, a non-profit professional organization dedicated to the promotion of ethical stage hypnotists and hypnotherapists everywhere. The Washington State Chapter provides regular meetings and educational opportunities for hypnotherapists, stage hypnotists and other interested persons. NGHWA meetings are open to the general public. NONPF = National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties

NOPP = Notice of Privacy Practice, a disclosure statement required by HIPAA regulations to be distributed once to each client beginning April 14, 2003. Samples  #1, (with samples in English, Chinese, Rusian, Spanish and Vietnamese.) and  #2.

NOS = Not Otherwise Specified.  This phrase is sometimes included as part of a mental health diagnosis.

NP = " A nurse practitioner ...is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience, which enables him or her to diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses, either independently or as part of a health care team. A nurse practitioner provides some care previously offered only by physicians and in most states has the ability to prescribe medications." [Thanks ACNP]

NPAP = National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis

NPI = National Provider Identifier, a ten-digit number which will become the standard unique health identifier for health care providers to use in filling and processing future health care claims--replacing common use of the provider's  social security number or employer identification number.  The National Provider System will begin accepting applications for NPIs after May 23, 2005. Priority will be given to "covered entities."  Providers who are not covered entities, but who wish to apply for NPIs, are asked to wait at least one year (5/23/06) before applying.   All "covered entities" must have and use their NPI number on all standard HIPAA transactions by May 23, 2007.[Thanks to Beth Powell in News from Washington in The Advocate, March 2004, an AMHCA publication.]

NPPES = National Plan and Provider Enumeration System assigns the unique identifiers required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) which mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for health care providers and health care plans.

NPPSIS = National Parent to Parent Support & Information Systems, Inc. has been established to nationally link families whose children have special health care needs or rare disorders. Parents looking for a match or are willing to network with other families nationally.

NPR = National Public Radio

NPS = National Provider System being formed by the federal government through CMS to meet the HIPAA requirements for adoption of a National Provider Identifier--a unique number for each health care provider to use in filing and processing future health care claims--by May 23, 2005. NPWF = Founded in 1971 as the Women's Legal Defense Fund, the National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes fairness in the workplace, quality health care, and policies that help women and men meet the dual demands of work and family.

NQCC = National Quality Caregiving Coalition, part of the (former First Lady) Rosalynn Carter Institute for Human Development.

NRF = North Rehabilitation Facility was a minimum security jail--a branch of the King County Jail--located in Shoreline, Washington, just north of Seattle.  It was noted for its programs that aid in the rehabilitation of minor offenders and helped insure their smooth return to the community and to productive lives.  At the time of it's closure October 2002 (for budgetary reasons), NRF was participating in a three year research program with researchers from the University of Washington to determine the effectiveness of the Vipassana meditation program in reducing recidivism in the jail population.

NSA = National Stuttering Association

NSAID or NSAIDs = non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Motrin, or generics such as: indomethacin, naproxen, oxyxprozocin and ibuprofen.  NSAIDs increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach and duodenum by two to three times and cause complications that kill 16,500 and hospitalize more than 100,000 annually.  [Thanks to Lee Bowman, Scripps Howard News Service, reported in the May 20, 2003, Seattle Post-Intelligencer.]

NSBA = National School Boards Association

NSDUH = National Survey on Drug Use and Health, formerly called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general US civilain non-institutionalized population, age 12 and older.  See also: SAMHSA.

NSPCC = National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (UK), founded in 1884 as the London SPCC, is the only UK children's charity with statutory powers that enable it to take action to safeguard children at risk of abuse.

N-SSATS = annual National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, Office of applied Studies, Substance Abuse and mental Health Services Administration.

NSSCP = National Standards for School Counseling Programs.

NSTA = National Science Teachers Association

NTOMS = National Treatment Outcomes Monitoring System, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment/Division of Services Improvement/Practice Improvement Branch, SAMHSA, the lead Federal agency for improving the treatment of substance related disorders intended to determine the quality and appropriateness of various forms of treatment. NTOMS is an ongoing surveillance system that will provide periodic reporting on access to and effectiveness of drug abuse treatment using a nationally representative sample of patients receiving treatment for psychoactive substance dependence in specialist treatment programs, regardless of funding source (public and private providers).

NUCC = National Uniform Claim Committee was created to develop a standardized data set for use by the non-institutional health care community to transmit claim and encounter information to and from all third-party payers. The NUCC replaced the Uniform Claim Form Task Force in 1995, and in 2005 was revising the 1500 claim form (also known as the CMS 1500 Health Insurance Claim Form) to accommodate the reporting of the National Provider Identifier (NPI).

NVC = Nonviolent Communication, see also, PSNCC.

NVLPC = Northern Virginia Licensed Professional counselors

NWCCU = Northwest Commission on Colleges & Universities, Redmond, WA, is a regional accrediting association for Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

NW3C = National White Collar Crime Center

NWADVTP = Northwest Association of Domestic Violence Treatment Professionals

NWDAC = Northwest Deaf Addiction Center, an alcohol and drug treatment program designed to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing individuals who use sign language as their primary mode of communication. NWHIC = National Women's Health Information Center, a project of the US Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health.

NWREL = Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory

NYMHCA = New York Mental Health Counselors Association, a state chapter of the AMHCA.

NZAC = New Zealand Association for Counsellors
