BA =  a Bachelor of Arts degree (or in Latin a Baccalaureus Artium), generally refers to a four year undergraduate degree.

BAI = Beck Anxiety Index

BACP = The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy [Thanks Kim Smith, UK]

BARS = 1. Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale (Akathisia is a relatively common side effect of antipsychotic medication although other drugs have been known to cause it.)   2. Behavioral Assessment and Research System 3. Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale [more]

BASIS = The Brief Addiction Science Information Source, Division on Addictions, Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School.

BAThH = British Association of Therapeutical Hypnotists which claims to be the "oldest established organisation specifically for professional hypnotherapists having been formed in 1951" in the U.K. "to seek official and public recognition of qualified practitioners of therapeutical hypnosis."

BBA = Bachelor of Business Administration degree

BBS = the Board of Behavioral Sciences is is one of the boards within the California Department of Consumer Affairs and regulates California Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Educational Psychologists, interns, and Associate Clinical Social Workers.

BCAMFT = British Columbia Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (Canada).

BCATA = British Columbia Art Therapy Association (Canada).

BCATR = British Columbia Art Therapist Registered (Canada).

BCBS = BlueCross BlueShield network (Delaware).

BCBT = Board Certification in Bereavement Trauma™, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCC = Board Certified Chaplain, a credential given by a small number of professional groups with similar and coordinated standards, such as the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, and the National Association of Jewish Chaplains. BCD = Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, clinical social workers with a masters degree, more than five years of experience in mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, who have passed an examination and met the other requirements for national certification by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (ABE). Annual recertification is required. [Thanks to Roberta Myers, Bellevue, Washington]. This certification is sometimes referred to in error as a BCDSW.

BCETS = Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress This is a national certification from the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, 368 Veterans Memorial Highway, Commack, NY 11725; telephone: 631-543-2217. This certification is now the international standard for clinicians performing "critical incident stress debriefings" in the aftermath of disasters or other traumatic events. BCMVT = Board Certification in Motor Vehicle Trauma™, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCPM = Board Certification in Pain Management™, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCRT = Board Certification in Rape Trauma™, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCSA = Board Certification in Sexual Abuse™, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCSCR = Board Certification in School Crisis Response, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BCSM = Board Certification in Stress Management, a certification of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®

BDD = Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a preoccupation with some imagined defect in appearance or a markedly obsessive focus  on a perceived abnormality of the nose, hair (any body part), complexion, or on the shape and weight of the body.  Sufferers feel misunderstood and cannot believe that others do not see their perceived ugliness.  This may manifest itself in eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.  Secrecy often delays diagnosis and treatment.

BDI = Beck Depression Inventory

BED = Binge Eating Disorder (this is not an approved DSM IV diagnosis).

BGLQT = Bisexuals, gays, lesbians, questioning and transsexuals (one of a number of acronyms containing these words, this one is the most democratic in that it is in straight alphabetical order and thus does not show preference for any group by listing them first.)

BHMCO = behavioral health managed care organization . These are insurance companies that attempt to control the delivery of mental health services by such means as pre certification of the client for services and contracting with preferred providers.  Examples would be Magellan Behavioral Health, UBH, MHN.

BID = Bellevue Index of Depression

BILY = " Because I Love You"  is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting parents with troubled children of any age.

BIQ = background investigation questionnaire

Blog = short for weblog, is often described as an online diary. The most recent entries (called posts) - appear on the homepage of the blog with links to archives of older posts. Archives are organized by date and often categorized by topic. Often, each post will have a form for readers to add their own comments and to give their opinion or reaction to the post's content. BRI = Board Registered Interventionist, either Board Registered Interventionist 1 (BRI I), or Board Registered Interventionist 2 (BRI II), Association of Intervention Specialists Credentialing Board. (see: AISCB)

BS = Bachelor of Science degree

BSA = 1. Black Student Alliance, 2.  Boy Scouts of America, 3. body surface area, 4. Business Systems Analysis [more]

BSc = Bachelor of Sciences [in the UK]

BSE = bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly referred to as "mad cow disease," is believed to be caused by a misshapened protein, produces sponge-like holes in a cow's brain.  It is not contagious, but is spread by cow feed containing brain or spinal tissues from an infected cow.  Eating meat contain brain or spinal tissue from an infected cow can cause the fatal human disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Cooking, even at high temperatures, does not destroy the protein.

BSFT = Brief Structural Family Therapy, developed by Jose Szapocznik, Phd, "is based on the Structural Family Therapy work of Minuchin (1974) and Aponte and Van Deusen (1981). It is a flexible model with the length of intervention tailored to the special needs of each family. The typical duration lasts 12 to 16 weeks, and its core components are joining, family-pattern diagnosis and restructuring." BSN = Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
