Homework is assigned for the time between sessions to help a client take the insights and information gained during sessions, into the real world with which to practice.
In a week, people who come to the office are children, adolescents, couples, families, and adults. The most common 'problems' are anxiety, PTSD (combat, auto accidents, rape, and so on), panic disorder, depression, and poor communication.
The treatment modality most commonly used is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which includes Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and EMDR. These methods 'bust erroneous thinking' and help the client retrain their brains to not react the way the did when therapy was first started.
