American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders   Created in 1988, as an international credentialing body devoted to establishing and upholding the highest standards for the provision of treatment in the addictive disorders.  Membership is comprised of psychologists, medical doctors, nurses, social workers and counselors from seven countries

American Academy of Pediatrics  an organization of 60,000 pediatricians committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents and young adults.

American Art Therapy Association  a national, non-profit association serving its members and the general public by providing standards of professional competence, and developing and promoting knowledge in, and of, the field of art therapy.

American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry is dedicated to promoting the mental health and well being of older people and improving the care of those with late-life mental disorders.

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, founded in 1942, is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy--represents the professional interests of marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad--and leads the way to increasing understanding, research and education in the field of marriage and family therapy, and ensuring that the public's needs are met by trained practitioners. 

American Association of Pastoral Counselors  (Professionally Integrating Psychotherapy and Spirituality)

American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, is a not-for-profit, interdisciplinary professional organization whose members share an interest in promoting understanding of human sexuality and healthy sexual behavior. 

American Association of Suicidology  A nonprofit organization dedicated to the understanding and prevention of suicide.

American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work  sets national practice standards, issues an advanced-practice credential, and publishes reference information about its board-certified clinicians.

American Board of Genetic Counseling prepares and administers examinations to certify individuals who provide services in the medical genetics specialty of genetic counseling, and accredits training programs in the field of genetic counseling.

American College Counseling Association is a national organization for persons in higher education settings whose professional identity is counseling and whose purpose is fostering student development.

American Counseling Association, founded in 1952, is a not-for-profit, professional and educational organization that represents professional counselors in various practice settings and is dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling profession.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention  (Dedicated to advancing our knowledge of suicide and our ability to prevent it.)

American Group Psychotherapy Association  (Enhancing the practice, theory and research of group therapy since 1942.)

American Mental Health Counselors Association  is the professional membership organization that represents the mental health counseling profession. Clinical membership in AMHCA requires a master's degree in counseling or a closely related mental health field and adherence to AMHCA's National Standards for Clinical Practice.    AMHCA State Chapters

American Orthopsychiatric Association  (The "ortho" is from the Greek "to straighten", and relates to the emphasis on the need for preventive and advocacy approaches to mental health.)

American Psychiatric Association is an organization composed primarily of medical specialists who are qualified, or in the process of becoming qualified, as psychiatrists. The basic eligibility requirement is completion of an accredited residency program.

American Psychological Association  (A professionals membership organization for psychologists.)

American Rehabilitation Counseling Association is an organization of rehabilitation counseling practitioners, educators, and students who are concerned with improving the lives of people with disabilities.

American Society of Addiction Medicine is the nation's medical specialty society dedicated to educating physicians and improving the treatment of individuals suffering from alcoholism and other addiction.

American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, founded in 1942, is the pioneer membership organization in group psychotherapy and continues to be a source for ongoing developments in group psychotherapy, psychodrama, and sociometry.

American Translators Association Voting members are professionally engaged in translating, interpreting, or closely related work.

Anxiety Disorders Association of America is a national, non-profit membership organization dedicated to informing the public, healthcare professionals and legislators that anxiety disorders are real, serious and treatable--promoting early diagnosis, treatment and cure of anxiety disorders.

ARNPs United of Washington State, affiliated with ACNP (American College of Nurse Practitioners)

Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences  specializes in licensure exam preparation and continuing education, serving the mental health fields.

Association for the Advancement of Psychology  (Promotes psychology’s legislative agenda and works to fix some of the problems that managed care has created for psychologists and patients.)

Association for Counselor Education and Supervision seeks the advancement of counselor education and counselor supervision, and the mastering of knowledge, skills, and competencies of its members who work in guidance, counseling, and student personnel services in all settings of society.

Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor [Formerly known as the American Association of Therapeutic Humor]  Members include an international community professionals who incorporate humor and laugher into their lives and work, people committed to humor and laughter, scholars and researchers who study humor and laughter, and all who feel they would benefit from the organization.  AATH is the leader in providing evidence-based information about current research and practical applications for humor.

Association for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues in Counseling a division of the American Counseling Association.

British Association of Therapeutical Hypnotists claims to be the "oldest established organization specifically for professional hypnotherapists having been formed in 1951" in the U.K. "to seek official and public recognition of qualified practitioners of therapeutic hypnosis."

British Stammering Association dealing with the condition known in the UK as stammering and elsewhere as stuttering.

California Association for Counseling and Development, a state branch of the American Counseling Association.

California Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.  

Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors, l'Association Canadienne des Conseillers en Genetique.

Center for Clinical Social Work, a national organization for all clinical social workers in any practice setting and at all levels of professional development. Clinical social work is the largest provider of mental-healthcare and related forms of healthcare in the United States.
 

Chemical Dependency Professionals of Washington State, state branch of NAADAC

Clinical Social Work Federation  (A confederation of 31 state societies for clinical social work.)

Danish Association of Social Workers, a professional association and trade union consisting of nearly all social workers in Denmark. Web site primarily in Danish. [Dansk Socialradgiverforening]

Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association, a state chapter of the AMHCA.  Dormant since winning the battle for licensure and third-party payment recognition, the organization is reactivating in 2005 to meet new challenges.
