Cowlitz County was formed on April 21, 1854 and is located in the state
of Washington. Cowlitz County's 2008 population was 101,254. Cowlitz
County forms the Longview, Washington, Metropolitan Statistical Area
which encompasses all of Cowlitz County. The county seat is at Kelso,
and Cowlitz County's largest city is Longview.
City of Kelso, WA: The
city of Kelso is the county seat of Cowlitz County, located in
southwestern Washington. Kelso is located on Interstate 5. Kelso is at
the confluence of the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia Rivers. Kelso is 48
miles north of Portland, Oregon and 125 miles south of Seattle, and only
80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. In 2000, Kelso's population was
11,895. Kelso shares its long western border with Longview, Washington.
It is located near Mount St. Helens.
City of Longview, WA:
Longview is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. It is
the principal city of the "Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical
Area", which encompasses all of Cowlitz County. The population was
34,660 at the time of the 2000 census. Longview is located in
southwestern Washington, at the junction of the Cowlitz and Columbia
rivers. Longview shares a border with Kelso to the east. Longview is
home to the famous Nutty Narrows Bridge. It is one of the only bridges
in the world to be designed and built strictly for squirrels. The bridge
was built in 1963 and it's purpose was to avoid squirrel casualties on
the busy streets beneath.

Kalama was unofficially incorporated on November 29, 1871. It was named
after the nearby Kalama River which took its name from a Native Hawaiian
