TAAP = Texas Association of Addiction Professionals is a membership organization that seeks to promote the advancement of Addiction Professionals by uniting alcoholism and other addiction counseling professionals throughout Texas. TAAP is the state affiliate of NAADAC.

TADS = " Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study," published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , August 18,2004.

TADT =  Trauma and Addictive Disorders Therapist certification, (a training facility designation) indicates a person who has been trained in the multi-addictions treatment approach (sex, chemicals, food, work, gambling, love addiction, etc.) by the Institute for Trauma and Addictive Disorders created by The Meadows Institute, 1655 North Tegner Street, Wickenburg, Arizona 85390, 1-800-632-3697

TANF = Temporary Assistance to Needy Families a public assistance program.

TAPS = Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors is a national non-profit organization committed to helping families, friends and military service members who have been affected by the death of a loved one serving in the armed forces.

TASC = Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities, an organization that supervises offenders in the community.

TASSC = Torture Abolition and survivors Support Coalition International

TAU = treatment as usual

TB = tuberculosis

TBI = traumatic brain injury--forceful closed or penetrating brain injury (not including degenerative conditions or congenital defects or brain injuries caused by birth trauma), resulting from external physical force which cause the brain to be banged against the sides of the skull resulting in a partial or total social or functional impairment or disabilities expressed as anxiety, attention deficit, behavior problems, depression, poor social boundaries, irritability, poor memory, or difficulties with physical functioning, speech, information processing or reasoning ability.

TCA = (1.) Tennessee Counselors Association  (2.) Texas Counseling Association  (3.) tricyclics, antidepresent drugs with a three-ring ("tricyclic") antihistaminic chemical structure. Cyclic antidepressants work by beefing up the brain's supply of norepinephrine and serotonin levels--chemicals that are abnormally low in depressed patients.

TCBAP = Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals

TDD = Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf 

TEDS = Treatment Episode Data Set. (a SAMHSA service.)

TEP = certified Trainer-Educator-Practitioner, a designation
of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama

TESOL Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

TF-CBT = Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

TFT DX =  Thought Field Therapy Diagnostics (a training facility designation) indicates a person who is trained and certified by Roger Callahan in Thought Field Therapy Diagnostics. Callahan Techniques is located at 45350 Vista Santa Rosa, Indian Wells, California 92210.

THC = tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

TIE = Treatment Improvement Exchange, provides information exchange between CSAT staff and State and local alcohol and substance abuse agencies.

TING = Trauma Interest Network Group, a special interest group of ACA, so that trauma experts could connect and benefit from each other's skills and expertise.  [Thanks to "Counseling Today," January 2005, a publication of the ACA.]

TIP or TIPs = Treatment Improvement Protocols, are "developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders. CSAT draws on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts to produce the TIPs, which are distributed to facilities and individuals across the country." TLC = National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children is a non-profit 501(c)3 program of Children's Home of Detroit, and provides direct services to traumatized children and families and provides school professionals, crisis intervention teams, medical and mental health professionals, child care professionals and clinicians with trauma education, training, consultation, referral services and trauma-specific intervention programs and resource materials needed to help children, parents, families, and schools traumatized by violent or non-violent trauma-inducing incidents. TLC offers a Trauma and Loss Certification Program (2.) Trauma and Loss Consultant (see National Institute, immediately above.) (3.) generic meaning, "tender loving care," as, "I'm going to give him lots of TLC when he gets back."

TLCS = Trauma and Loss Consultant Supervisor, a certification by National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (see TLC, above.)

TLE = Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

TLS = Trauma and Loss Specialist, a certification by National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (see TLC, above.)

TMA = Transitional Medical Assistance

TMHCA = 1.) Tennessee Mental Health Counseling Association. 2.) Texas Mental Health Counselors Association.

TTS = Tobacco Treatment Specialist

TTS-C = Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist

TTY = Teleprinter, Teletype, Teletypewriter: a device that permits individuals with hearing and speech impairments to communicate by telephone. (See also, TDD.)

UA, UA's, UAs = urinalysis, giving a sample of one's urine for testing, as to determine medical or disease conditions or recent drug use.

UBH = United Behavioral Health, a BHMCO.

UCA = Utah Counseling Association

UCDS = Universal Credential DataSource, a credentialing system developed by the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare.  By creating an online database that collects all provider information necessary for credentialing, CAQH hopes to eliminate the paperwork and hassle that many providers face during the credentialing process.

USCIS = United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

USERRA = Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, a federal law that offers various protection to employees called into active military service.

USPHS = United States Public Health Service

USPRA = United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, an organization of psychosocial rehabilitation agencies, practitioners, and interested organizations and individuals dedicated to promoting, supporting and strengthening community-oriented rehabilitation services and resources for persons with psychiatric dis­abilities.  Formerly known as the IAPSRS.

USRP = United States Refugee Program

UWCNE = Continuing Nursing Education at the University of Washington School of Nursing (Seattle).

VAC = Virginia Counselors Association,  affiliated with American Mental Health Counselors Association.

VACC = Virginia Association of Clinical Counselors, a division of the Virginia Counselors Association.

VC = vocational counselor or vocational counseling (abbreviation).

VIP = Veterans' Incarcerated Project, King County Washington.

VNS Therapy = Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy is being investigated as a possible long-term maintenance therapy for patients with chronic or recurrent depression, but as of February 2002 has not been shown to be more effective than a placebo.

VRDE = Violence Reduction and Drug Enforcement

VRS = Vocational Rehabilitation Services

VT = vicarious traumatization, a condition occasionally experienced by counselors due to the cumulative effect of..."repeated exposure to stories of trauma, abuse and neglect or to coping with clients who engage in pathological relationship patterns with their therapists." VTMHCA = Vermont Mental Health Counselors Association.

VUCSA = refers to a Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act, (chapter 69.50 RCW--Washington State) usually by the illegal possession of a controlled substance (drug).  This is a felony offense for which the person can be arrested, charged, tried and imprisoned.
