CHAMMP = Center for Healthcare Improvement for Addictions, Mental Illness, and Medically Vulnerable Populations.   CHAMMP is a program of the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, dedicated to sharing evidence-based knowledge with the goals of helping medical and behavioral care practitioners to improve the lives of patients.  The CHAMMP Training Institute is a division of CHAMMP.

CHEA = Council for Higher Education Accreditation, Washington, DC., is a professional accrediting organization.

CHES = Certified Health Education Specialist, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

CHINS = " Child in Need of Services" under Washington State laws.

CHIP = Children's Health Insurance Program [best acronym, see also: SCHIP]

CHT = Certified Hypnotherapist--a training facility certification by the Wellness Institute, Inc., headquartered in Issaquah, Washington.

CHTP = Certified Healing Touch Practitioner.

CI = confidential intermediary, a person who is appointed by the court (under the adoption laws of many states) to represent an adoptive parent, a birth parent, an adopted child or member of the birth parent's family to search for and make contact with other members of the adoption triangle--the adoptee, birth parent or adopted person's family. CICC = Certified Internal Corporate Coach, ICF Credentialing Program

CICSW = Certified Independent Clinical Social Worker (Wisconsin?)

CIPS = Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies.

CIRS = Certified Insurance Rehabilitation Specialist credential was established in 1984 by the Certification of Insurance Rehabilitation Specialists Commission (CIRSC) as the premier certification to recognize the specialized skills of those individuals working in the field of insurance rehabilitation. The commission changed its name in 1996 and became the Certification of Disability Management Specialists Commission. (see: CDMS.)

CIRSC = Certification of Insurance Rehabilitation Specialists Commission, renamed in 1996 as the Certification of Disability Management Specialists Commission (see; CDMSC.)

CIS = (1.) Career Information System (Oregon) (2.) Career Information Specialist , (3.) Center for Information Services.  (4.) Citizenship and Immigration Services [See: USCIS]  (There are many more meanings.)

CIT =  (1.) Crisis Intervention Training has various meanings, but includes training for police officers who deal with mentally ill people on the street, persons bent on suicide, or emotionally unstable persons with weapons.  (2.)  Chemical Dependency Counselor in Training, a certification by the NWIADSCB.

CJITF = Washington State Children's Justice Interdisciplinary Task Force

CLAS = National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services.

CLC = the Chicano/Latino Caucus is associated with the California Association for Counseling and Development.

CLPCA = Colorado Licensed Professional Counselors Association

CLSE = Council of Learned Societies in Education

CMA = " Certified Movement Analyst" The Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies officiates this credential affirming professional level skills in: qualitative movement embodiment, movement observation and analysis, and verbal description of movement complexities and subtleties. CMA's work in the dance world, in nonverbal communication research, in consulting and movement education fields. Some dance therapists (DTR) also have earned the CMA.  (see also, ADTR and DTR).

CHAMPUS = Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services is now called TRICARE in the Department of Defense Military Health System.

CME = Continuing Medical Education [Thanks to Sandy Collier]

CMHC = (1) Certified Mental Health Counselor (a State of Washington professional designation, replaced in 2002 by the LMHC designation. or (2) Community Mental Health Center.

CMHCA = (1) Connecticut Mental Health Counselors Association or (2) Colorado Mental Health Association

CMHS = (1.) Center for Mental Health Services, a part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (2.) Child Mental Health Specialist.  In Washington State, DSHS requires that at least one person in each Community Mental Health Agency--who already has a professional state license (as a counselor, psychologist, etc)--must also meet the requirements for a CMHS found in Washington Administrative Code (WAC), 388-865-0150.

CMP = Civil Money Penalties [Thanks to Judy Roberts, MA, LMHC, discussing penalties for violating provisions of HIPAA in her article "Dual Relationships in a Small Community" published in the January issue of Insights, a WMHCA publication.]

CMS = federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (formerly HCFA).

CMSA = Case Management Society of America.  CMSA defines case management as, "a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual’s health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality cost-effective outcomes."

CMT = (1) Certified Massage Therapist, (2) Certified Medical Technician, (3) Certified Medical Transcriptionist, (4) Crisis Management Team.  [more]

CNPP = Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

CNS = central nervous system

CNVC = Center for Nonviolent Communication, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to living and teaching the process of nonviolent communication.

CO = Corrections Officers

COAMFTE = Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education, Alexandria, VA., is a professional accrediting organization.

COB = Committee on (treatment) Benefits, a blue-ribbon task force of employers, insurers, HMOs, providers and physicians who are working to produce a more flexible, efficient and cost-effective system of chemical dependency treatment.

COBRA = (short for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985) COBRA provides a safety net between health plans for qualified workers, their spouses, and their dependent children when their health insurance might otherwise be cut off by crisis such as unemployment divorce or death. Also see HIPAA.

COD = Co-Occurring Disorders (co-occurring disorder diagnoses require that at least one mental health disorder and at least one substance-use disorder occur concurrently ill).  COD is preferred over related acronyms: MICA or DD.

CoDA = Co-Dependence Anonymous

CODIAC = Co-Occurring Disorders Interagency Advisory Committee.

COLA = cost of living adjustment

CONUS = (1.) Contiguous United States (2.) Continental United States

COTA = certified occupational therapy assistant. [Thanks to Susan McClure, OTR/L]

CPA = (1.) Community Protection Act, passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1990, to increase prison terms for sex offenders, establish registration and notification laws, authorize funds for the treatment of adult and juvenile sex offenders and provide services for victims of sexual assault. (2.) Certified Public Accountant (and many other meanings).

COPARC = Council of Presidents and Region Chairs, American Counselors Association.

CORE = Council on Rehabilitation Education, Schaumburg, IL., is a professional accrediting organization.

COSA = This is now officially the name of an organization rather than an acronym.  "There was (internal) disagreement as to whether 'C.O.S.A.' stood for 'Codependents of Sex Addicts' or 'Co-Sex Addicts'...(so) the official name of our organization is now 'COSA,' not "C.O.S.A."...Each COSA member may choose to define him/herself as a codependent of sexual addiction, as a co-sex addict, or simply as a member of COSA, according to his or her own personal experience and conscience...The International Service Organization Of COSA is a recovery program for men and women whose lives have been affected by someone else's compulsive sexual behavior."

CP = (1.) Certified Practitioner of Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy [Thanks to Paul Berkelhammer, Seattle.] (2.) Chest Pain, (3.) Child Protection, (4.) Chronic Pancreatitis, (5.) Couch Potato. [more]

CPAC = Chronic Populations Action Council [Seattle]

CPADAC = Certified Provisional Alcohol/Drug Abuse Counselor (Nebraska).  All Certificate holders of CADAC or CPADAC shall be deemed licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors in the State of Nebraska as of July 1, 2004.

CpastC = Certified Pastoral Counselor

CPC = Certified Professional Counselor

CPCE = Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination is given by more than 180 universities and colleges across the US and Canada.  The CPCE reflects CACREP's eight core curriculum areas and is designed to assess counseling students' knowledge of counseling information viewed as important y counselor preparation programs.  [Thanks to The NCC, Spring 2007, page 19, a publication of the NBCC.]

CPE = (1.) Continuing Professional Education, generally referring to advanced training required to maintain professional certification or licensing.  (See CEU.)  (2.) Clinical Pastoral Education, the basic unit of federally approved chaplaincy education, usually sponsored by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. CPGC = Certified Problem Gambling Counselor, Washington State Gambling Counselor Certification Board, (206) 546-6133.

CPGTP = Certified Problem Gambling Treatment Provider , a new (2002) certification proposed by the Washington State Council on Problem Gambling.

CPHQ = Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality

CPLT = Certified Past Life Therapist, a training facility certification from the Past Life Certification Program, a home study course. Past life regression is based on the belief in reincarnation--"the rebirth of a soul in a new body."

CPhT = Certified Pharmacy Technician

CPI = (1.) Chronic Public Inebriate  (2.) Cash--Personal and Incidental  [or "clothing, personal maintenance, and necessary incidentals"]  A monthly cash grant given to public assistance patients in inpatient treatment to fund the purchase of small personal and incidental items (i.e.: toothpaste). [See: WAC 388-478-0045 Payment standard for persons in certain group living facilities.] or (3.) Consumer Price Index

CPP = Community Protection Program 

CPR = Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation

CPSS = Client/Patient Sample Survey, Office of applied Studies, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

CQAIE = Center for Quality Assurance in International Education, often referred to simply as "CQ."

CRC = Certified Rehabilitation Counselor

CRCA = California Rehabilitation Counseling Association, a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.

CRCC = Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, Schaumburg, IL., is a national certification organization.

CRMA = Career Resource Managers Association

CRNA = Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

CRPCP = California Registry of Professional Counselors and Paraprofessionals

CS = Clinical Supervisor

CSAAS = Child Sexual Abuse Accommodation Syndrome, developed around 1983 by Dr. Roland Summit as a diagnostic tool, is at the center of a dispute: whether CSAAS can be used to distinguish between abused and nonabused chldren if the cluster of defined symptoms is present.

CSAC = Certified Substance Abuse Counselor [Thanks to Ann L. Miller, PhD, LCSW, LSATP, CSAC]  

CSADC = Certified Supervisor Advisor Drug Abuse Counselor [Thanks to George Bates, MS, LCPC ]

CSAP = Center for Substance Abuse Prevention

CSAT = 1. Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, part of the US Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. 2. Certified Sex Addiction Therapist a facility certification offered by the Meadows Institute. [Thanks to Kathy Kelley]

CSC = Certified Spiritual Counselor  (re: reincarnation & past lives regression).

CSCA = California School Counselors Association, a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.

CSDC = The Congress of State Drug Courts of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals was launched in 1997 as a vehicle to empower, support and nurture leadership at the state and local levels. Comprised of two representatives from each state association, including one criminal justice professional and one treatment professional, the congress advocates for state and federal resources and funding and helps NADCP establish national policy.

CSJ = Counselors for Social Justice, was an organizational affiliate of the American Counseling Association and as of September 2002 has become the newest division of ACA.

CSMHG = Council of Special Mutual Help Groups Networking and support for professionals recovering from chemical dependency.

CSMS = Certified Sentence Mitigation Specialist, provides sentencing mitigation evaluations to defense counsel in criminal court cases. Mitigation services include counseling and extensive background history and evaluation of the defendant's mental health; collateral interviews, writing social history reports, etc. [National Association of Forensic Counselors]

CSO = The Community Service Offices are the local branches of the Department of Social and Health Services (see DSHS) handling direct services to the public, such as public assistance.

CSOM = National Center For Sex Offender Management

CSOT = Certified Sex Offender Treatment Specialist, a certification granted by the National Association of Forensic Counselors. Also see: CCSOTS. [Thanks to Barry T. Levy, Long Beach, CA.]

CSP = 1. Certified Sociological Practitioner, a certification offered by the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology.  2. compulsive skin picking (related: OSP, OSPA and  Dermatillomania).

CSPI = Center for Science in the Public Interest , a nonprofit education and advocacy organization that focuses on improving the safety and nutritional quality of our food supply and on reducing the deaths and injuries caused by alcoholic beverages.

CSPD = Comprehensive System of Personnel Development.  Planned steps for RSA to "satisfy the goal of having all vocational rehabilitation counselors meet the highest standards for education and training.  [Thanks to Washington Update, October 2005, Counseling Today.]

C-SSWS = Certified School Social Work Specialist, a certification of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) that recognizes documented education and supervised experience in this area of social work specialization. CST = CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CST was developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University.

CSW  means either (1.) Certified Social Worker, formerly a State of Washington professional designation--now replaced by the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, or (2.) Clinical Social Worker (a title describing the type of social work being performed) but persons with higher qualifications will generally be listed as QCSW or DCSW.

CSWCM = Obsolete acronym for Certified Social Work Case Manager.  The current acronym is "C-SWCM" (see below) and recognizes expertise in the area of "case management" (as distinct from counseling).  [Thanks to Susan B. CSWE = Council on Social work Education

CSWF = Clinical Social Work Federation

C-SWHC = Certified Social Worker in Health Care, a specialty certification of the National Association of Social Workers.

CT = Certified in Thanatology, from the Association of Death Education and Counseling, recognizes a counselor's specific educational background in dying, death and bereavement.  Thanatology is the branch of science that studies the social and psychological aspects of human death: the circumstances surrounding a person's death, the grief experienced by the deceased's loved ones, and larger social attitudes towards death such as ritual and memorialization.

CTC = Certified Temperamental Counselor (or) Certified Temperament Therapist. [Thanks to Laurie S. Mendez, LCPC]

CTR = Certified Trauma Responder, a certification issued by The Association for Traumatic Stress Specialists.

CTRS = Cetrified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, often an integral part of the treatment team working with individuals diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, including addictions. Areas of focus include leisure education, coping skills, stress management/relaxation skills, expressive art therapy, values clarification, relapse prevention, and education about healthy lifestyles. CTS = Certified Trauma Specialist, a certification issued by The Association for Traumatic Stress Specialists.

CUSSN = Computer Use in Social Services Network

CVCP = Crime Victim Compensation Program  [ In Washington State] [ Find a WA state CVCP counselor or therapist.]

CWC = California Women's Caucus (see CACDCWC)

CWLA = Child Welfare League of America

CX = current expense.  Business and governmental budgets mention the Current Expense Fund (CX Fund)
