CAARS = Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scales used to measure ADHD in individuals aged 8 to 80.

CACD = California Association for Counseling and Development, a State Branch of the American Counseling Association.
CACDBC = the CACD Black Caucus is part of the California Association for Counseling and Development.
CACDCWC or CACD/CWC = The CACD California Women's Caucus is associated with the California Association for Counseling and Development.
CACD-APAC = CACD Asian-Pacific American Caucus, is associated with the California Association for Counseling and Development.
CACECA = California Adult and Continuing Education Counselor Association
CACES = California Association for Counselor Education and Supervision a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.
C-ACYFSW = Certified Advanced Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker, a specialty certification of the National Association of Social Workers.
CACH = (1.) California Association of Catholic Hospitals, (2.) Canadian Adult Congenital Heart Network, (3.) Consortium for the Advancement of Childhood Health, (4.) Central Alabama Comprehensive Health (in random order).
CACREP = Counsel on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, Alexandria, VA., is a professional accrediting organization. Formed as a corporate affiliate of ACA in 1981, CACREP's mission is to promote the professional competence of counseling and related practitioners through the development of preparation standards, the encouragement of excellence in program development, and the accreditation of professional preparation programs. CAD = coronary artery disease (same as coronary heart disease) a narrowing of heart arteries due to buildup of fatty deposits called plaques. It is the number one cause of death for both men and women.
CADAC = Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor [Massachusetts]
CADCA = Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America
CAGC = Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors, l'Association Canadienne des Conseillers en Genetique.
C-AHEAD = Counseling Association for Humanistic Education and Development, a division of the American Counseling Association.
CAM = complementary and alternative medicine. Sometimes used in a written sentence such as, "CAM practitioners commonly..." CAM is "...a broad domain of resources that encompasses health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period. CAM includes such resources perceived by their users as associated with positive health outcomes. Boundaries within CAM and between the CAM domain and the domain of the dominant system are not always sharp or fixed." CAMA = Correctional Accreditation Managers Association
CAMC = California Association for Multi-Cultural Counseling is chartered jointly by the California Association for Counseling and Development and the Association for Multi-Cultural Counseling and Development.
CAMHCA = California Mental Health Counselors Association, a state chapter of the AMHCA.
CAMHS = Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, a counseling specialty in the United Kingdom.
CAMECD = California Association for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.
CAMFT = California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists
CAMHCA = California Mental Health Counselors Association
CAMS = Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality "was developed to modify clinician behaviors in how they initially identify, entgage, assess, conceptualize, treatment plan, and manage suicidal outpatients....CAMS provides mental health counselors with a novel clinical approach that is tailored to a suicidal client's idiosyncratic needs thereby insuring the effective clinical assessment, treatment and tracking of high risk suicidal clients." CAPT = California Association of Psychiatric Technicians
CAQH = Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare is a "nonprofit alliance of the nation's leading health plans and networks that works to simplify healthcare administration." As part of this effort they have developed the "Universal Credentialing DataSource" which offers practitioners "a secure and simplified method of navigating the credentialing process." CARF = Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, to advocate and promote quality rehabilitation services, the organization is now known simply as CARF.
CARRP = California association of Rehabilitation & Reemployment Professionals (formerly CARP).
CARVIC = California Religious Values and Issues in Counseling, a division of the California Association for Counseling and Development.
CAS = Certified Addictions Specialist CAS is a comprehensive credential which includes specialty areas of competencies, including alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, gambling addiction, and sexual addiction. CASA = The King County Dependency Court Appointed Special Advocate Program trains volunteers to be advocates for abused and neglected children involved in dependency court cases.
CASS = Counseling And Student Services clearing house. Often combined with ERIC, as in ERIC/CASS. On December 19, 2003 the ERIC Clearinghouse on Counseling and Student Services closed. Counseling Outfitters LLC, is a new company created by the Co-Directors of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Counseling and Student Services (ERIC/CASS) to continue the development and delivery of many of the services and products previously provided by ERIC/CASS.
CASWCM = Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager: an old specialty certification acronym of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Now C-ASWCM. [Thanks to Susan B. CBCAP = Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention program (a service of the US Department of Health and Human Services) supports individual state efforts to create and operate statewide networks of community-based and family centered support programs which strengthen families and reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect.

CCBADC = California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors offers certification on a voluntary basis to applicants who meet the criteria for the certifications CADC or CCS. The certificate is the counselor’s passport to relocation through application for reciprocity to any member board with ICRC.
C-CATODSW = Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Social Worker is a specialty certification of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) that recognizes documented education and supervised experience in the treatment of chemical dependency. CCBT = Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist is a certification offered by the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, PO Box 2195, Weirton, WV 26062, 1-800-853-1135, a group that promotes cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and those who practice it.
CCC = (1.) Counselling Code of Conduct, the name of a national counseling organization in the United Kingdom that offers some free counseling, checks counselor qualifications, offers a code of ethics, a complaints procedure and liability insurance for its members. CCCI = Centre for Community Change International
CCCJS = Certified Clinical Criminal Justice Specialist, a specialty certification of The National Association of Forensic Counselors. See also: CCJAC, CCJAP, CCJAS, CCJP.
CCCL = California Coalition for Counselor Licensure, a 501(c)(6) organization, was formed "to promote and advance the profession of counseling and to protect consumers of counseling services in California. Its goal is to establish and maintain qualifications, ethics, and practice standards for Professional Counselors, and by initiating State regulation of Professional Counselors through licensure, to assure adherence to such standards." (2007: California is the only state that does not license professional counselors.)

CCMHC = Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor A specialty certification for clinical mental health counselors. CCS = (1.) Certified Clinical Supervisor [in some cases this certification is offered by a state certification board (NC) and in others by a state counselor's organization (2.) Certified Clinical Sociologist (3.) Catholic Community Services. [This particular set of initials has over 400 other meanings.]

CDC = (1). Center For Disease Control and Prevention , U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. (2). Chemical Dependency Counselor--In Washington state the term designated a person with the required level of training for persons working in substance abuse treatment programs. The CDC replaced the former title Qualified Chemical Dependency Counselor (QCDC). The CDC designation was replaced by the CDP in 2001. (3). Chemical Dependency Center (4). CDCA = Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board)

CDF = Career Development Facilitator --a paraprofessional credential offered by the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) that began its growth in the United States and is now being offered internationally as the Global Career Development Facilitator (G-CDF) in Japan and New Zealand.
CDI = Children's Depression Inventory
C-diff = Clostridium difficile, a bacterial infection that is found in the colon and can cause diarrhea and a more serious intestinal condition known as colitis. C-diff has grown resistant to certain antibiotics that work against other colon bacteria. When patients take those antibiotics, competing bacteria die off and C-diff explodes. [Thanks to Mike Stobee, The Associated Press, Seattle P-I, 5/29/08] Use common sense: wash hands frequently, avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics, promote growth of good bacteria by consuming yogert with helpful live bacteria cultures, especially during and after taking antibiotics. [C-diff is NOT a common counseling acronym, but is included on this list temporarily to help inform the public.]
CDMHP or CDMHPs (plural) = County Designated Mental Health Professionals are mental health professionals who are designated by a contracting agency or hospital to fulfill contractual obligations with a county under Washington State laws governing involuntary commitment and other designated duties. Often abbreviated as MHPs. {Additional 2005} "County designated mental health professional" as defined in RCW 71.05.020 was changed to "designated mental health professional" by 2005 c 504 § 104. CDMS = Certified Disability Management Specialist. [Thanks to Lita Perna.]
CDMSC = Certification of Disability Management Specialists Commission, prior to 1996 was known as the Certification of Insurance Rehabilitation Specialists Commission. (see: CDMS, above.)
CDP = Chemical Dependency Professional (New in 1999 as State of Washington professional designation, CDP indicates that the holder meets requirements to work as a counselor in a chemical dependency treatment program, but does not authorize private practice.) Replaces "Chemical Dependency Counselor" (CDC) designation.
CDPT = Chemical Dependency Professional Trainee (counselor completing internship hours). [Washington State].
CDPWS = Chemical Dependency Professionals of Washington State
CDRS-R = The Children's Depression Rating Scale, Revised,modeled after the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression for adults.
CDS = 1.) Chemical Dependency Specialist (a national certification) the initials are usually followed by a Roman Numeral between I and III to indicate increasing levels of experience and competency. CDVC = Certified Domestic Violence Counselor, a specialty certification of the National Association of Forensic Counselors. They are numbered I, II, III, and IV. The higher the number the higher the holder's accidemic degree. [Thanks Dr. Frank Palani.]
CE = continuing education
CEAP = Certified Employee Assistance Professional [ CEAP Verification Directory ]
CEC = 1.) Council for Exceptional Children
2.) continuing education credit (referring to training required for continued professional certification or licensing, "You will receive three CECs for this training session.") See also: CEU.CEDS = Certified Eating Disorders Specialist A counselor with special training to work with problems such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, obesity, etc., a specialty certification of IAEDP.
CEHs = Continuing Education Hour . See also: CEUs and PDHs.
CERT = Cognitive Emotional Restructuring Therapy developed by Sandy Riggin. [Reported by Jonathan Rollins in a Counseling Today article, July, 2005.]
CEU or CEUs = continuing education unit or units. A CEU is a measure of time spent in educational activity. Ten clock hours of education equals one CEU. "A contact hour is the same as a clock hour. So, if you attend a workshop for three hours, you earn three contact hours of credit. Some providers use the term CE credits or CE hours or just CEs, and these also mean regular clock hours. The term CEU...is different. One CEU is actually worth 10 clock hours so, if used correctly, 17 clock hours equals 1.7 CEUs....Many providers use the term CEU as if it were synonymous with clock hours..." CEWG = Community Epidemiology Work Group of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health, 6001 Executive Boulevard, Bethesda, Maryland 20892.
CEs or CE's = continuing education (see CEUs, above). (CEs was found in 2003 AMHCA conference literature.)
CFAE = Certified Forensic Addictions Examiner, evaluates clients referred by the criminal or civil justice system, probation, parole, defense attorney's, etc, for not only their substance abuse disorder, but also for co-occurring disorders--formulating a DSM IV diagnosis and making recommendations to the referral source, for referral to appropriate treatment. CFR = Code of Federal Regulations, as in "42 CFR Part 2" (meaning Volume 42, Part 2) the federal regulations governing the confidentiality of alcohol and drug abuse patient records.
CFT = (1.) Certified Family Therapist, a certification by the National Credentialing Academy. (2.) Certified Focusing Trainer, a training facility certification offered by The Focusing Institute, 34 East Lane, Spring Valley, NY 10977. 1-(845) 362-5222
